Journey Overview

Overview

Some journeys are not really about wildlife. They are about a place someone in the family once lived, a story handed down, a return after many years, or a first visit to a part of the world that has always meant something personally.

A heritage journey is built around that reason for travelling. Where the connection is to a particular town, region or landscape, we work it into the route and give it the time it deserves — alongside the wildlife and scenery that make the rest of the trip worth the distance.

These itineraries are put together case by case, because no two are alike. Tell us what draws you to East Africa and what you hope to see, understand or find again, and we will shape the journey around it.

Itinerary

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day 01

Arrival and orientation in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi and settle in. The first evening is spent going over the route together, particularly the parts of it that matter most to you, and adjusting anything before you set off.

Day 02

Travel to the region at the heart of the journey

Move on to the area your journey is built around. The drive itself is part of it, and your guide can give context to the landscape, the towns and the communities you pass through.

Day 03

A day without a timetable

A full day in that area, deliberately left open. Some guests want to walk, ask questions and take their time; others prefer to keep moving. The day is planned on the morning itself.

Day 04

People and place

Time with a local community, a market, a school or a project, depending on what fits your journey and what can be arranged respectfully in advance.

Day 05

Into the wild country

Continue to one of the wildlife areas — commonly the Maasai Mara or Amboseli — for a change of pace and an afternoon in the field.

Day 06

A last morning, then Nairobi

An early drive before breakfast, then the return to Nairobi for onward travel, or an extension to the coast.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a heritage journey?

A journey planned around a personal reason for coming to East Africa rather than around a wildlife itinerary. That might be a family connection to a place, a return after many years, or an interest in a particular culture or region.

Can you help me find a specific place?

If you can tell us roughly where it is, we can usually work out how to reach it and build the time into the route. The more detail you have before you travel, the more we can do with it.

Do you carry out family history research?

No. We are a safari operator, not a genealogy service. We build the travel around what you already know, and we will say so plainly if something cannot be reached or confirmed.

Can a heritage journey include a safari?

Yes, and most do. A few days in the wildlife areas is a natural counterpart to the personal part of the trip, and it is usually what makes the long flight worthwhile for everyone travelling.

Who guides these journeys?

The same KPSGA Silver Badge professional guiding that leads our wildlife journeys, with local support arranged in the specific area you are visiting where that adds something.

How long should I allow?

It depends entirely on how far the personal part of the journey sits from the wildlife areas. We will be honest about travel times once we know where you want to go.
